“The scene was originally scripted that Blair elbows Dan in the ribs, but then they carry on with the scene in the play they’re performing, and only begin to argue once they walk offstage. I was running two hours behind on my shooting schedule and I suddenly had a brainstorm that I could catch up if I combined the two scenes. I called Stephanie Savage and asked if i could insert the argument into the scene on the stage, so that the two characters are arguing in between their lines of dialogue for the play. Stephanie agreed to let me try this. Penn and Leighton and I discussed where each of the lines of the argument could fall, and the actors quickly relearned their dialogue and they carried it off without a hitch. I think it plays far funnier than it would have had they had the argument offstage as scripted. So it was a creative solution to a schedule problem and the result was a happy one for me. We pulled together, did it on the fly, it worked, and that’s probably why it’s my favorite.” (x)
